In September last year, Rainforest Organization announced first steps toward a cooperation with UNESCO to promote the Xingu Indigenous Territory (TIX) as an international biosphere reserve and world heritage.

This initiative followed the visit of the great tribal leader Raoni Metuktire and the leaders Tapi and Watatakalu Yawalapiti from the Xingu Indigenous Territory (TIX) to the Élysée Palace in June 2023, upon the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. A programme blueprint was subsequently presented during the French President’s state visit to Belém on 26 March 2024. UNESCO’s institutional support was then formalized with a Letter of Intent in May 2024, laying the groundwork for the official recognition of the TIX as a UNESCO world heritage.

We are proud to announce that the project has now entered a new stage. Sufficient funds have now been secured to enable the recruitment of an expert consultant to prepare the recognition of the TIX as UNESCO world heritage site.

This project holds deep significance for us. We believe it will strengthen the protection of the unique ecosystem and cultural heritage of the Xingu Indigenous Territory and enhance global awareness of its invaluable role in preserving the Amazon’s biodiversity.
